LANDSCAPE STUDY: HOW PREVALENT IS DCD?

In 2022, The DCD Foundation and The Education University of Hong Kong collaborated to research the prevalence of DCD in Hong Kong and the impact on the lives of those affected. The research reveals that DCD is prevalent among Hong Kong children and its effects appears to increase with age

  • The study estimated that nearly one in five children in Hong Kong are affected by DCD.
  • One in ten children needs to be included in educational support to lessen the impact of motor coordination impairment on their daily lives.
  • 19.7% of children would benefit from support work for motor coordination disorders.

The study showed that motor coordination impairment is common among children in Hong Kong and becomes more pronounced with age. Those categorised to have suspect dyspraxia/DCD make up 13.8% among 5 to 7 years old, 21.9% among 7 to 9 years old, and 24.3% among 10 to 12 years old.

Those with suspected DCD tend to have:

  • poorer overall health
  • lower physical activity
  • less positive emotions
  • more severe cognitive difficulties.
